This century old cemetery is the only Spanish cemetery in the Philippines that is a perfect square. The overall design is Romanesque with a hint of Gothic rosettes carvings all over its four solid posts and among the walls of the three entrances. Upon entering the middle part of the opening of the cemetery, I was welcomed by the long standing Indian trees along the sides of the passage and behind it, was tombs of mostly Cabatuanons. As I walk through, going to the center of the cemetery, there is a huge octagonal baroque mortuary chapel.
I can tell from its appearance that it is really more than a hundred years old. Even though it was restored, the markings of old age throughout its walls are still visible. Every time I go here to visit my loved ones, I am always in disbelief as to how this structures still stand strong despite its age. It witnessed more than a century worth of history of Cabatuan and became one of the municipality’s historical and cultural pride.
